From the minute you put out the first bowl of Halloween candy to the last toast on New Year's Eve, you're living in the danger zone. The average weight gain during the Holidays is 2 pounds - that the average which means there are some lucky bodies who don't gain a pound and some who put on more than the dreaded 2!
Here are 5 Tips to Keep Your Weight Steady while You Enjoy the Holidays.
⇆
Add a Walk! Whether you take a stroll to check out the Halloween decorations, have a "find the prettiest leaf" walk with the grandchildren or do some old-fashioned caroling, there are lots of good reasons to take a walk. Add some mileage to your Holidays - even if you just make the dog walk a little further. Adding walking - or any exercise - is going to help you keep those extra pounds off.
⇆
Take Another Walk. Take this one around the buffet table or the wonderful selection of hors d'oeuvres at a party. Know what's available to eat before you take a bite. You're going to see some foods and sweets you love and some you are dying to try! Set a limit. Try to stick to three but don't go over five. Let your limit -- one sweet, one savory, one salty and one dessert - might work. But, don't take a bite yet! Start out with the healthiest foods available - veggies, fruits or, even, a few shrimp. Now, indulge in the goodies you've chosen. Think of it as mindful eating and put some thought into what you'll select.
⇆
Take a Break to Socialize. After you've had your first sampling of treats or your first helpings at dinner, don't help yourself to more. Instead, socialize. It takes about 20 minutes from your brain to get the signal your stomach is full. At a party, walk around the room. You can even make it your goal to meet someone new because that's healthy, too. At the table, stop and chat or hold the baby and give the mother a break. Eat slowly, chew longer - savor the pleasure of both the food and the family and friends. You'll eat less.
⇆
Keep Away from the Food - Physically. Don't station yourself by the hors d'oeuvres table. It's just too tempting to reach out and help yourself. If a couple of hors d'oeuvres have a 100 calories and you keep nibbling, pretty soon you'll have eaten a full meal worth of calories before dinner is served. Try to find a spot where if you're going to snack on the nuts, the cookies or the goodies, you have to excuse yourself and walk across the room. You just might not make the trip.
⇆
Don't Go Hungry. If you go to a party or dinner hungry, you're simply going to eat more - remember that 20-minute rule. By the time you push away from the table or say no the next round of goodies, it may be too late. Instead, drink some water and munch on some low calories foods before you leave home.
